Is Wegovy effective for weight loss?

Clinical trials have shown Wegovy as effective for weight loss. Here are the key points to consider:

  • Obese adults who took Wegovy lost an average of 15% of their weight during a 68-week weight loss journey.
  • People who took Wegovy lost about 33 pounds (15 kilograms) when they made lifestyle changes. In comparison, those who didn’t use the drug only lost 5 pounds (2 kilograms).
How does Wegovy help you lose weight?
  • Semaglutide, the active ingredient in Wegovy, uses a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist which mimics the action of a naturally occurring hormone in the body to make you feel less hungry.
  • The GLP-1 hormone helps regulate appetite and food intake by sending signals to the brain that you are full. This causes a decrease in hunger because you feel fuller for longer after consuming smaller amounts of food.
  • The active ingredient in Wegovy helps slow down gastric emptying. This means the stomach takes longer to empty its contents into the intestine making you feel fuller.
  • Wegovy also helps control blood sugar for individuals with type 2 diabetes.

Whilst being effective in suppressing appetite and aiding weight loss, Wegovy works best when used in conjunction with a healthy balanced diet and regular physical exercise. For instance, eating fatty foods or drinking sugary drinks can make the drug less effective.

Wegovy vs Placebo clinical trial results

During trials, patients treated with Wegovy we more likely to lose weight, compared with those treated with a placebo.

Direction of Use

Wegovy dosage instructions

  • Wegovy weight loss injections are available in different dosages and comes in a pre-filled pen.
  • The injections come in dose of 0.25 mg, 0.5 mg, 1 mg, 1.7 mg, and 2.4 mg of semaglutide pre-filled injections.

The dosage of Wegovy is gradually increased over time. That means the recommended dose schedule starts at 0.25 mg and increases gradually on a monthly basis to the maximum dose. This is achieved over a 16-week period with once-weekly injections.

The reason for this gradual increase is to minimise gastrointestinal side effects. As the body gets used to Wegovy, it becomes tolerant to higher doses.
